How to Photograph Clothes for Sale – 7 Tips for Photos That Sell
1. Natural light is key
Shoot near a window during daylight hours. Natural light shows the garment's true colors and creates a professional look. Avoid flash – it creates harsh shadows and distorts colors.
2. Clean, simple background
A white or light background lets the garment stand out. A white wall, white sheet or white cardboard – anything clean and uniform. Avoid busy backgrounds or clutter.
3. Show the garment from all angles
Photograph from the front, back, side, and close-up details. Let the buyer see the brand tag, size label, closure/zipper, and special details like embroidery or patterns.
4. Photograph flaws – honestly
If there's a stain, small tear, missing button – photograph it up close. This builds trust and prevents returns. Buyers appreciate honesty and prefer to know in advance.
5. Ironing makes a difference
An ironed garment looks better in photos and conveys a sense of care. Wrinkles make a garment look old and uncared for, even if it's in excellent condition.
6. Shoot on a hanger or flat
Two styles that work: hanging on a hanger or flat on a clean surface (flat lay). Dresses and coats look better on hangers. Tops and pants work great as flat lays.
7. Minimal editing
Play a bit with brightness and contrast, but don't overdo it. Don't change colors – the buyer needs to see the real color. Cropping unnecessary background will improve the photo.
