Closet Cleanout – How to Make Space and Make Money
When and how to do a closet cleanout
The best time for a closet cleanout is at the start of a season – September before winter and March before summer. Begin by taking everything out of the closet, item by item. Ask yourself: "Did I wear this in the past year?" and "Would I buy this today?" If the answer to both is no – the item needs to go. An average cleanout reveals 30-40% of items that haven't been worn in a year, which can be turned into cash.
The sorting method: sell, donate, keep
Create three clear piles. "Sell" – items in good condition, branded, that have value. "Donate" – items too worn to sell but still usable. "Keep" – only what you actually wear and love. Pro tip: if you're undecided, set it aside for two weeks. If you didn't look for the item during that time – it belongs in the "sell" pile.
What sells well from your closet
Branded items in good condition are the big winners. Levi's jeans, Zara dresses, branded bags and quality coats – all sell quickly on Swapo. Shoes in good condition, accessories and children's clothes (lightly worn) are also excellent sellers. New items with tags are pure gold and can sell for 50-70% of the original price.
How to list quickly and start selling
Don't get stuck on listing – on Swapo it takes 2-3 minutes per item. Take 3-4 photos in natural light, write brand + size + condition, and set a price. Block off an hour or two and list 10-15 items in a row. The more items you list, the higher the chance of a quick sale. Sellers with 10+ items see results within the first week.
The emotional aspect – how to let go of clothes
Closet cleanouts can be emotional. The dress you wore to a special event, the gift from your partner – it's hard to let go. But a garment that isn't worn is a garment going to waste. Think of it this way: someone else will enjoy wearing it, and the money you receive will fund an item you actually need. Take a photo "for memory" if you need to, and give it a new life.
